Exclusive Mix: Cubic Zirconia

To celebrate the release of Hoes Come Out At Night we are pleased to present a Diskotopia exclusive mix by Cubic Zirconia.

Cubic Zirconia are New York based Tiombe Lockhart, Nick Hook and Daud Sturdivant. Their mix of classic disco & acid house paired with modern day wonky dancefloor aesthetics has been catching the attention of DJs and record labels both sides of the Atlantic, including London based Night Slugs head honcho, Bok Bok.

The digital release of their latest number Hoes Come Out Tonight, a slow grimey ghetto banger, is out today (September 21st) on Don’t Cry Recordings. The digital package, along with the original, features a remix by Hyperdub producer Ikonika. Ikonika’s take on the tune lets Tiombe Lockhart’s dirty rap vocals ride her charging 145bpm riddim; and whilst infusing it with all of her signature cosmic synthwork, she creates a delightfully ghettotech-flavoured peak-time heavy dancefloor killer.

A very special white label 12” of the tune comes out on Night Slugs next week (September 27th). This includes the aforementioned Ikonika remix, although on the flip-side things get rather deeper, as Night Slugs captain Bok Bok and Cubic Zirconia’s Nick Hook collaborate on an retrofuturistic acid-bassline drop by the name of “Reclash”. This time Tiombe is a ghostly presence, delivering disorientating incantations over Bok and Hook’s jacking 808 drums and soaring synth psychedelia.

And to celebrate all of this, Cubic’s Nick Hook has made a rather awesome exclusive mix for us here at Diskotopia, featuring a very fine selection of off-kilter dancefloor creamers. We have been aware of this gentleman’s very fine taste in music after checking out THIS MIX over a year ago, witnessing his coincidental mutual love of amongst others, Tortoise, Aphex Twin and Phil Collins. So we are ecstatic that he has been so kind to make equally devastating mix for us.
