Mary Anne Hobbs in Japan

This month Mary Anne Hobbs plays at the July 17th DBS event celebrating Unit’s 6th Anniversary, alongside drum and bass luminary DJ Fresh, Japanese dubstep major leaguer Goth-Trad, Diskotopia resident Matt Lyne and more…

Mary Anne Hobbs](http://www.myspace.com/maryannehobbs) is best known for her BBC Radio One shows, having been with the station for the last 14 years. Her ‘Dubstep Warz’ show for Radio1 in January 2006 is widely regarded at the show that broke the dubstep sound globally; and her current Thursday night slot is internationally regarded as one of the best showcases of new underground abstract electronic music in the world.
Having spent three years working for the NME writing cover stories on everyone from Ice Cube to Nirvana, perhaps quite surprisingly now, Mary Anne went on to form part of the original team put together to launch British lad-mag Loaded, as Music Editor and more.
Moving into radio she presented groundbreaking shows on XFM helping to win their official licence before being poached by Radio 1 in 1997.
Over the years, Mary Anne’s time at Radio 1 has been hectic, including hosting shows from all the major UK award ceremonies: Q, NME, Brits, Kerrang, Mercury Music Prize and founding and fronted the award-winning Radio 1 Rock Show for five years.

The Radio One Experimental Show, previously called The Breezeblock, which she has been running since starting at Radio One, is perhaps Mary Anne Hobbs’ most acclaimed achievement. Over the years the show has kept abreast of all the most exciting new underground to come out, with live sets and mixes by countless artists, from Bjork, Beatie Boys, Chemical Brothers and DJ Shadow back in the day to Flying Lotus, Vex’d, Ikonika, Starkey, Deadboy and many other upcoming artists this year.

Following ‘Evangeline’ in 2008 and ‘Warrior Dubz’ in 2006 last September she released ‘Wild Angels’, the 3rd in a trilogy of definitive underground electronic compilations for the Planet Mu label.

This year Mary Anne returns for her fourth successive year to the Sonar Festival in Barcelona. This year taking Flying Lotus, Joy Orbison and Roska with her to curate the BBC Radio One stage there. Following her historic UK Dubstep Showcase in 2007 which brought the sound out of boutique clubs for the very first time and onto an international festival stage infront of 8.5 thousand with Skream, Oris Jay and Kode 9, she has taken Joker, The Gaslamp Killer, Martyn, Mala, and Shackleton the last couple of years.
